Proprietary name (and dosage form):

Vitamin D3 Capsules

Composition:

Each capsule contains:
Vitamin D3  1000 i.u.

Pharmacological Class: A34 (other) Complementary Medicine

Pharmacological Action:

Vitamin D is carried in the bloodstream to the liver, where it is converted into calcidiol and then converted into calcitriol, the biologically active form of Vitamin D, defending the body against microbial invaders. When synthesised in the kidneys, calcitriol circulates as a hormone regulating the concentration of calcium and phosphate in the bloodstream, promoting the healthy growth and remodelling of bone.

Indications:

For use in patients deficient in Vitamin D.

With today’s indoor living and the extensive use of sunscreens due to the fear of skin cancer, there is a possibility of Vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D is found in very few foods so intake may be low. The best food sources are salmon, tuna, mackerel, beef liver, cheese and egg yolks. Low dietary Vitamin D levels can be compounded by milk allergy, lactose intolerance, strict vegetarianism and inadequate absorption. As we age, especially after the age of 50, our bodies need more Vitamin D therefore Vitamin D supplementation becomes more important as we grow older.

Colds and Flu: Vitamin D plays an important part in maintaining the immune system. A strong immune system may help to reduce both the frequency and severity of bouts of colds and flu.

Osteoporosis: Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones and teeth. Deficiency of Vitamin D leads to abnormal bone formation in children, bone thinning and softening in adults.

Well-being: Lack of Vitamin D can lead to a lack of energy and even depression.

Contra-indications:
